Tomato Rasam Recipe | How To Make South Indian Tomato Rasam Recipe

Today we are going to make a very interesting and traditional south Indian dish which is famous all over the India that is tomato rasam.  Tomato Rasam is traditionally prepared using kokum or tamarind juice as a base with addition of tomato and some basic spices. Steamed lentils can be added along with any preferred vegetables. This is sour, spicy and body warming dish which is famous in south India. Rasam is eaten with rice or separately as spicy soup. In a traditional meal it can be part of a course that includes sambhar rice and curd rice. So lets start the tomato recipe with a quick hand.

Necessary Ingredients We Required

To make rasam powder

  • Toor dal = 1 tbsp
  • Fenugreek seeds = a pinch
  • Coriander seeds = 2 tsp
  • Peppercorn = 2 tsp
  • Red chili = 2 nos
  • Cumin seeds = 2 tsp
  • Curry leaves = very few
  • Garlic = 4 cloves
  • Asafoetida powder = a pinch

To make tomato rasam

  • Tomato = 5 nos, chopped
  • Mustard seeds = 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds = 1 tsp
  • Red chili = 2 nos
  • Oil = 2 tbsp
  • Garlic = 2 cloves, crushed
  • Turmeric powder = 1/2 tsp
  • Tamarind puree = 1 cup
  • Salt = to taste
  • Water = 3 cups
  • Ghee = 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida powder = a pinch
  • Curry leaves = very few
  • Coriander leaves = few

Methods For Making Tomato Rasam

Step 1

Heat a pan and dry roast all the rasam powder ingredients until it get nice aroma to make rasam powder.

Step 2

Let them cool and then grind it into a course powder.

Step 3

In a deep pan or kadai, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chilies,, crushed garlic, asafoetida  powder, curry leaves and stir it for 5 minutes.

Step 4

Once the mustard seeds start flattering add chopped tomatoes and saute for a while.

Step 5

To the above ingredients add turmeric powder, salt and saute it till tomatoes get mushy.

Step 6

Now add tamarind puree in it. Cover the lid and let it cook for about 5 minutes.

Step 7

After tomatoes get well cooked add ground rasam powder and water. Mix everything well and let it boil for 5 minutes.

Step 8

Finally add coriander leaves and 1 tbsp of ghee to enhance the flavor. Close the lid and let the rasam sit for 5 minutes.

Your Tomato rasam is now done. Serve it hot with rice.
