Restaurant Style Sambar Recipe At Home

Sambar is a south Indian dish which is delicious in taste and can be made easily at home. South Indian people are very delightful to have it in their meal. So if you are also fond of south Indian food then try this easy yet delicious recipe of sambar which can be made with pigeon pea lentils by adding some vegetables in it. This sambar gravy can be eaten with dosa, idli, vada, upma. So let’s know how to make it easily at home.

Required ingredients for sambar

  • Pigeon pea (arhar dal) = ½ cup
  • Pumpkin pieces = ½ cup
  • Oil = 2 tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds = 1 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves = 7
  • Asafoetida = 1 pinch
  • Tomato puree = ½ cup
  • Onion = 4 medium size
  • Tamarind pulp = 1 tablespoon
  • Sambar powder = 3 tablespoon
  • Red chili powder = 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder = ½ teaspoon
  • Salt = as per taste
  • Green coriander = 2 teaspoon (finely chopped)
  • Drumsticks = 1 (cut in 3 pieces)

Method for making sambar

Step 1

Wash the pigeon pea well and put it into a pressure cooker.

Add 2 cup of water in the pressure cooker, 1 pinch turmeric, 1 pinch salt and let it cook until 3 whistles of pressure cooker.

Step 2

After the fixed time, check whether the lentils get soft or not.

Mash the lentils well.

Step 3

Now take a pan, add 1 cup of water into the pan and also add pumpkin pieces and drumsticks into the water. Let them cook for 4 to 5 minutes on the slow flame.

Remember that the vegetables which are going to add in the sambhar become soft.

After the vegetables become soft, kept them aside.

Step 4

Take another fry pan, add oil in it and let it heat.

After heating oil, add mustard seeds in the oil, curry leaves and asafetida.

Let them crackle for few seconds.

Step 5

Now add chopped onions in the oil and let it cook until it becomes pink.

Now add tomato puree in the onion and cook them well for 2 to 3 minutes by mixing it.

Step 6

When tomato gets cooked well then add boiled pumpkin pieces and drumsticks in the mixture.

Also add tamarind pulp, sambar powder, cooked pigeon pea lentils (arhar dal), red chili powder and salt.

Step 7

Let them cook by adding ¾ cup of water in the pan and mix them together very well.

Cook them for 5 minutes by continuously stirring the spoon in the sambhar and after 5 minutes, cover the lid of the pan and let it cook for more 5 minutes.

After fixed time, transfer it into a dish and garnish it with fresh coriander leaves.

Your south Indian sambar is ready, serve it hot with dosa, idli or anything you like.
